It explores the parallels between heat, light, and attention—each capable of dispersing widely or focusing with precision. The work invites the audience to experience the intense, unrelenting warmth of being truly seen. But what happens when this act of seeing is no longer human, yet mediated by the artificial? The work explores thermoception of infrared radiation (i.e. the feeling of light) as a gateway to deeper bodily awareness. Similar to how infrasonic sounds can only be felt by the body, so also can light only be felt by the body within the infrared spectrum. In an era where digital distractions pull us away from the physical, how can we reconnect with our own corporeal presence? Why have so many ancient traditions emphasized embodied awareness? And what ancient role does the sun play in the embodiment of the human? The piece invites you to discover the intimate dialogue between body sensations and the strange sense of being Seen by the Sun. You step into a dark room. Hanging from the ceiling is an artificial sun; like a searchlight casting a red, warm glow. It moves slowly, as if scanning for something. Then, suddenly, it locks onto you. The intensity of the light is tangible. It feels as though it's awareness itself is shining down on you, and you begin to form sweat beads under its warmth. And yet, your body relaxes in the glow of the infrared radiation. You start to move around, and the light follows you. As if conscious of your presence. You continue into the next room. A large, brightly lit screen stands before you. On it, you see tiny human figures from a bird’s-eye view, like a surveillance feed. As you watch, a red circle appears around one of the figures. Your gaze shifts, and the circle moves with it. The screen is tracking where you’re looking, following the focus of your attention. And then you realize: it is your gaze that tells the sun where to shine. The warmth you felt just moments ago wasn’t random. It was someone else, watching you. Nowadays, we are more distracted by our digital devices than ever, which is why the connections between us are crumbling. We must be more mindful of what we are paying our attention to, so we assigned kids to come up with rituals that help them be more attentive towards one another. These symbolic choreographies are recorded with a pointcloud camera and creatively visualized by Nikzad Arabshahi and myself to show you the normally invisible bridges in between us. The children are recorded using 3D camera’s which do not record a color image, but instead shoot out thousands of dots of light, measuring the time-of-flight it takes the photons to bounce back into the camera. This is how it reconstructs a 3-dimensional image. During my artistic experiments, participants showed an enhanced ability to access and process specific memories from the past, a phenomenon resonant with EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy. The Light of Attention is a graduation thesis written for the Bacholor of Interactive Media Design at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague. Exploring the nature of Attention, Perception &amp; Embodiment, this thesis encounters three essential ingredients to sail the seas of the 21st century. It starts from the realization that the new cognitive pressures of digital media and its disruptive attention economy are demanding our collective and adaptive response. Through personal experience, I’ve learned that all intentional change starts with attention. Simply said: the first step to changing anything in this world is to place our attention upon it. Yet, as society today is becoming increasingly more distracted, it is now attention itself which requires close inspection. As an artist, I want to contribute to a cognitive maturation of society by creating spaces in which we can re-ritualize the conscious movement of mind by bringing its invisible properties to light. Being reminded of the mysterious and elusive power of attention, I intend for people to be similarly re-inspirited and re-incorporated within their bodily minds, so we may realize we are carriers of an unfathomable power within. Carriers of the light that is attention. Through this thesis I aspire for people to find common ground in a common problem; the loss of sovereignty over our awareness. Combined with a renewed sense of the illusions of perception, our awakened attention will be able to more rapidly revitalize our world-views and shorten the feedback loops between the ‘hyper-novel’ world and our mental models of it. We know our senses speak. But are we listening? We’ve forgotten that observing the senses with conscious attention is radically different from relating to the world without it. Attention, in this way, can be seen as the primordial substance. The more we consciously let it flow through our doors of perception – filling the nooks and crannies of the sensuous world – the sharper our images of reality become. Yet, without embodiment, attention alone is proven to have faint influence on changing human action. Our reality is dematerializing, software is eating the world, and most activities are becoming mental activities. Thus, it has become imperative to maintain a careful connection to the body if we want to affect any change at all. Embodiment reminds us to feel the body as whole, because our consciousness originates from its entirety. As a solution, the practice of meditation, to redeem our minds and reconnect with our bodies, has proven for thousands of years to be the fundamental stepping stone towards creating a better present for the individual, yet the question is: can it be implemented to create a better future for the collective too? Perhaps if we remember we are the Ouroboros, eternally chasing, birthing, molding, and creating, our own futures. By way of curiosity and experimentation I began to structuraly analyze brainwave patterns emerging during meditation practice using a Muse Headband sensor. From the data I collected it was clear that the practice has a noticable influence on the changes measured in my brainwave frequencies, of which it was particularly strengthening the Alpha range (8- 12 Hz) related to a state of wakeful rest and concentration. I used this data as the inspiration to create an interactive garment that makes this normally invisible dynamic perceivable to the eye. The aesthetic of the meditation cloak is strongly influenced by the attire of monks and wizards within historic and contemporary storytelling, clearly referencing the magical and super-natural aspects of ancient spiritualism. The light, which moves up and down the spine is based upon my own experience during a 10-day meditation course, where spontaneaously a clear current of energy can be felt moving from the base of the spine, up through the spinal cord and out the top of the head. This movement of energy is further emphasized by a laser light shooting from the fontanel (the area that remains soft with a new-born baby). There is a strong connection here to the theory of Kundalini or Prana, refering to a snake like energy coursing through the body.
